Hello and welcome to Caravel Cleaning Company.

Today we are talking “DUST”.

What makes us crazier than dust all over our house?

Other than cleaning bathrooms, it’s probably the top complaint that we have from clients and potential clients.

Here in Ventura County, we’re a highly agricultural area, so there’s always a lot of dust in the air. And I know across the country there are several places that have the same problem.

So, we are going to talk about ways, that even if you have a professional cleaning service, you can keep that under control in between visits.

So, first of all, I am holding something very low-tech here. This is an old-fashioned feather duster, and I highly recommend that you get one. But there are a couple of things that you have to keep in mind. The first thing is, it must be an ostrich feather duster. You can’t just go out to the Dollar Store or Walmart and pick up one of those beautiful rainbow-colored ones.

It must be ostrich. And I would highly recommend that you try to find a professional grade ostrich feather duster. Because just like with down comforters and that type of thing, there are different qualities of feathers. And so, a professional grade is going to be a higher quality.

It’s not going to be cheap. You’re probably going to expect to pay $10-$20 for a decent quality feather duster. However, it will really pay for itself… because you’re not going to have dust everywhere.

Another tip is that we have a tendency to dust like this… To do a little flicking action to dust. That’s not the right way to dust! All that does is knock the dust loose, and transfers it somewhere else, right?

So, it’s just going to leave here and it’s going to go over there. And then I’m going to go there, and dust and flick it and it’s going to go somewhere else. And that’s why you feel like you can never keep up. Because all you’re doing is knocking dust from one place to another.

So, what I want you to practice is being very deliberate, and very, kinda slow, it’s going to feel a little slow when you dust. And you can dust all kinds of things with your new little feather duster that you get. You can dust your table tops, and don’t forget to get down underneath. And then don’t forget your plants. Plants are going to love being dusted. And this is very soft and very gentle. You’re not going to hurt your plants with this. So just dust them off a little bit.

Now, once you’ve dusted an area, you’ve got all of that dust hooked inside of your ostrich feather duster, right? All of these little hooks on the ends of each one of these feathers is now full of dust. So, how are we going to get rid of that dust?

What I want you to do is grab it by the end of the handle, so you can get it down low, and I want you to drop it down towards the floor and tap-tap it on your shoe. Ok, so I just want you to practice that – tap-tap.

So, after every little area that you dust, drop it down, tap-tap.

And what that’s going to do is that’s going to take all that dust and it’s going to knock it loose down on the floor so we don’t have it blowing all over in the air just dropping on other things.

Then you’re going to come through and vacuum later – sweep or vacuum, whatever you do. But that’s really the way that you want to dust. So, reach out, get yourself a high-quality feather duster, and tackle that dust in your house today!
